HAZRAT KHWAJA NASIRUDDIN ABU YUSUF
CHISTI
(RADI ALLAHU ANHU)
INTRODUCTION
Hazrat Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu) was a very great
Sufi mystic who, through his strenuous spiritual strivings and
service to the dervishes, attained nearness to his creator. His
spiritual impact was such, that whoever stayed in his company
for three days, became a perfect sufi and was given the ability
to perform miracles. The mureeds of Hazrat SHEIKH SHIBLI (Radi
Allahu Anhu) and Hazrat JUNAID BAGHDADI (Radi Allahu Anhu) used
to pay him regular visits, and join in him in sama mehfils, and
the moment they looked at the face of Khawaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi
Allahu Anhu), they used to enter a state of "wajd".
Hazrat Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi
Allahu Anhu) was an Islamic scholar of a very high calibre, and
always loved the seeking of knowledge. His Murshid, Hazrat
Khwaja Sheikh Muhammad Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu) used to tell
him that Divine knowledge is that type of knowledge, that is
beyond human intelligence. Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Rasi Allahu
Anhu) was blessed with this divine knowledge by Allah.
BAI'AT
& INSTRUCTION UNDER HIS MURSHID
Once, Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu) tried to test the
knowledge of Hazrat Khwaja Muhammad Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu),
and questioned him of a certain matter. To that one question,
Khwaja Muhammad Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu), gave 700 answers.
Seeing the oceanic knowledge of his, Hazrat Khwaja Yusuf Chisti
(Radi Allahu Anhu), humbled himself and became the mureed of
Hazrat Khwaja Muhammad Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu).
His murshid then ordered him to
recite his (Khwaja Muhammad Chisti's) name seven times and look
towards the sky, and thereafter, recite it seven times again and
look towards the ground. When he looked towards the sky, he
could see the "Arsh" of Allah, and when he looked towards the
ground, he could see till the abyss. His murshid then taught
him the "Isme Azam", which was given by Hazrat KHIZR (Alaihis
salaam), through which all the spiritual knowledge was disclosed
to him.
Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi
Allahu Anhu) remained under the spiritual training of Hazrat
Khwaja Muhammad Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu) for 40 years. During
this period he remained engrossed in the zikr of "La Ilaha
Illallah". He fasted regularly, and after every three of four
days, he broke his fast with eating not more than three morsels
of food. He kept aloof from the worldly people, and remained in
the company of the dervishes.

Khilafat in the
Chistiya Silsila
After this 40 year period
of strenuous spiritual striving, Hazrat Khwaja Muhammad Chisti (Radi
Allahu Anhu), bestowed upon him the mantle of Khilafat of the
Chistiya Silsila. After bestowing upon him the khilafat, his
murshid addressed him by saying,
"O NASIRUDDIN, You have adorned the
garb of the Chistiya Masters. It is now compulsory upon you to
follow strictly upon the code of ethics of our masters. You should
consider yourself the lowest, and everybody else greater than you.
You should always love and respect the poor and down-troden people,
because for us, showing love for the poor, is showing love for the
King of Madina Munawwara, Rasoolallah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam."
Accepting these instructions of his
spiritual guide, he retired into seclusion.
Life of Khwaja
Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu)
Once, a person asked the
Great Khwaja, "O Master! People, due to their sins, will be thrown
into the fire of hell, but what will happen to the sinful fuqara?"
The Master replied, "The Prophet
Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said that the fuqara, due to their
sin, will enter hell, but the fire of hell will have no effect on
them because they are protected by the mercy of Allah. Thereafter,
they will enter paradise, but until their enemies are not pleased
with them, no dervish will enter paradise."
The Master then said, "When the
enemies of the fuqara will see what favours Allah has bestowed on
the fuqara, they will automatically become pleased with them. Then
Allah will say to the enemies of the fuqara, 'O enemies of my
friends, since you have become pleased with them, you too enter
paradise'."
Hazrat Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi
Allahu Anhu) used to celebrate the Urs of his Murshid, and during
this period he used to get food prepared for the distribution to the
poor. It is said that whichever poor person visited the home of the
Shiekh, they always returned pleased. He never gave place to the
king in his assembly, and never let a rich man sit above a poor
man. Like all the Mashaa'ikh-e-Chist, he also loved the listening
of sama. His mehfils used to be attended by the ulema, fuqara, and
leading mashaa'ikh. He never allowed the worldly people to enter
his mehfil-e-sama, and whichever worldly person entered by force, he
immediately became a "majzoob" and renounced the world and became a
dervish engrossed in the worship of his creator. During the
mehfil-e-sama, when Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu) cried, it
had such an effect on the people attending, that they used to enter
a spiritual state and began crying.
Concerning sama, a person once
asked Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu Anhu), "O Grand Master, if
sama is a thing that connects a servant with his Creator, then why
did Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi Radi Allahu Anhu make tauba over
sama?"
The Master replied, "He did not
make tauba over sama. He gave up sama because those people like
Hazrat Shibli Radi Allahu Anhu, who were worthy of sama, were
not present there with him, and it is important to listen to sama
with those who are worthy of it. That is why he gave up it's
listening."
Khwaja Yusuf Chisti (Radi Allahu
Anhu) swore an oath and said, "If Hazrat JUNAID BAGHDADI was in
Chist, or I went to his mehfils in Baghdad, he would never have made
tauba over sama."
(NB! He did not make tauba over
sama thinking it to be an impermissible act, BUT, because
there were none present that could understand the secrets of sama,
he refused to listen to it anymore.)
Demise
Hazrat Khwaja Yusuf Chisti
(Radi Allahu Anhu) passed away in Jamad'il Awwal 459 AH. His mazaar
is situated in Chist, in Afghanistan. He bestowed the khilafat of
the Chistiya Silsila upon his beloved mureed, Hazrat Khwaja Moudood
Chishti (Radi Allahu Anhu).
